George A. Lehner

CHAIR

George Lehner is currently a partner with Pepper Hamilton, where he previously worked in private practice as a litigator. Before returning to Pepper Hamilton, Mr. Lehner was Attorney Adviser International in the US Department of State Office of the Legal Adviser. From 1977-1980, Mr. Lehner also served at the State Department, focusing on international economic and development issues. A Wesleyan University graduate, he was elected Phi Beta Kappa and received his J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan. Mr. Lehner has authored several journals on international arbitration and business matters and is co-author of Europe Without Frontiers: A Lawyer''s Guide. He was appointed Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University School of Law, where he has taught both introductory and advanced courses on European Community Law. Mr. Lehner has served as General Counsel to the Women''s International Media Foundation, The Washington Press Club Foundation, and The Women''s Foreign Policy Group. Prior to joining the Board of Trustees of The Fund for Peace in December 2002, he served as its pro bono attorney for many years.

Siobhan MacDermott

VICE-CHAIR

Siobhan MacDermott is one of the foremost experts on the future of Information Technology, consumer dynamics, cybersecurity, privacy, and business leadership, both within the U.S. and globally. She currently serves as Chief Policy Officer of AVG Technologies.

Ms. MacDermott has worked in senior leadership positions at some of the best U.S. and global technology companies. As both advisor and executive, she helped direct strategy, global marketing, media relations, communications, investor relations, government relations, issue management and policy for companies such as Intel-MacAfee, AVG Technologies, Oracle, HP, RSA Security, Betrusted andSprint PCS. In that capacity, she has worked directly and extensively with Boards of Directors and has lead successful initiatives to engage governments, stakeholders, including policymakers, NGOs and global institutions on existing and emerging issues and regulations.

Ms. MacDermott is widelypublished, appears frequently in the media and speaks at conferences around the world -- working with and participating in the World Economic Forum and theClinton Global Initiative. She has authored white papers and articles on privacy, consumer dynamics, consumer rights and winning leadership and business strategies. Most recently, Ms. MacDermott authored a Children's book on Internet Safety - "Little Bird's Internet Security Adventure" and "Wide Open Privacy – Strategies for the Digital Life" (IT-Harvest Press, 2012).

Ms. MacDermott is both a U.S. and EU national, has worked on four continents and speaks five languages. She received her MBA in International Business from Thunderbird School of Global Management, is working on her second Masters degree at the Fletcher School of Tufts University, and advises and serves on several Board of Directors of U.S. and international institutions.

Barbara Dillon Hillas

SECRETARY

Barbara Dillon Hillas specializes in the rule of law developing, managing and implementing international legal and judicial reform projects. She has worked with governments, international organizations and NGOs to provide legal and technical assistance to the judiciary, the bar, and law faculties. She has experience working in 16 countries and 5 continents. Since January 2012, Ms. Hillas has been the Lead Subject Matter Expert for the largest Rule of Law program in the world: the Justice Sector Support Program (JSSP) at PAE, Inc., the implementer of the U.S. Department of State's Rule of Law project in Afghanistan. She also serves as a member of The CEELI Institute's International Advisory Board. She earned her JD at The Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of America, and a Masters in European Union Studies at the Istituto degli Studi Europei “Alcide de Gasperi”, in Rome. She received her B.A. from Marymount College, New York.

Pauline H. Baker

PRESIDENT EMERITUS

Pauline H. Baker served as President of The Fund for Peace for fifteen years from 1996 to 2010. Dr. Baker also served as a Professorial Lecturer at The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and as an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School of Foreign Affairs at Georgetown University. An internationally recognized political scientist and specialist on African affairs and fragile states, Dr. Baker lived and worked in Nigeria from 1964 to 1975. She also conducted research in South Africa and served as Staff Director of the Africa Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A member of the Council on Foreign Affairs, Dr. Baker appears in the media, lecturers widely and is well-published. Her latest publication is “Unraveling Afghanistan,” in the American Interest, December, 2013. She earned her doctorate with Distinction from UCLA in 1970 and did her undergraduate work at Douglass College, Rutgers University.

Jeffrey Chertoff

TRUSTEE

Jeffrey Chertoff is a recognized financial expert with exceptional board audit committee qualifications applicable across all industries and businesses. He has career-long experience as a CFO partnering with boards and is a valued leadership strategist for U.S. and international businesses as well as meeting business turnaround, expansion and redirection challenges, including investment, M&A and process/performance improvement. He is a proven expert in raising and managing capital and deal structuring. Since 1998, he has served as the CFO and as a senior executive of various private and public Board committees for Daiwa Securities America, Cantor Fitzgerald, eSpeed (first CFO after 9/11), Labranche, Stonecastle Partners and Bonds.com Group, a public financial technology company at which he was director on its Board. Previously, he was the Controller at Salomon Brothers for the US investment bank and started his career at Bear Stearns and PwC as an auditor and CPA. In 2003, while at Cantor, Jeff was honored as Executive of the Year by the Institute of Management Accountants for NYC. Jeff is a director on the board of the non-profit organization “Sing for Hope” whose mission is to make art and music accessible in under-resourced areas from schools to community centers and to healthcare facilities in NYC. Currently, Jeff is advising emerging companies on financial and operational matters and with capital raising opportunities, in addition to evaluating and making investments.

MG (ret) Michael W. Davidson

TRUSTEE

General Davidson’s military career concluded with six years of service on the Joint Staff in the Pentagon where he was the Assistant Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, for National Guard matters. Prior to that time, his assignments as a general officer were as the Deputy Commander in Chief for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs, U.S. Special Operations Command; Deputy Commanding General (National Guard), U. S. Army Special Operations Command; and the Adjutant General of Kentucky. He is a Vietnam veteran and served with the Airborne Ranger Infantry Company of the First Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam. General Davidson is an attorney admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He holds a PhD from the University of Louisville and authored Victory at Risk: Renewing America’s Military Power. He serves on public and private boards, both for profit and not for profit. He currently serves as the outside director for a US subsidiary of DB Schenker, a European based global logistics and freight company.

Karen Diener

TRUSTEE

Ms Diener is a Senior Advisor in the Geospatial Services Industry and runs her own company, KD Geospatial Solutions LLC. She has over 26 years intelligence, defense and commercial industry experience focused on imagery and geospatial intelligence, ground stations, and commercial product integration. Developing and shaping new markets, “out-of-box” strategic planning, identifying and integrating new technologies to solve customer’s problems, and connecting the right companies and people together to accomplish these goals is what Ms Diener is passionate about. Her varied experience on both the operations and technical sides of business supports her unique ability to find new business models for high-growth, fast changing market segments focused on getting geospatial products and services to customers and end users in the most efficient and timely manner possible. Ms. Diener was educated at the University of Minnesota and the University of Phoenix and holds a BS in Business Information Systems. Her interests include mountain climbing, sailing, and traveling the world, particularly to Southern California where her two sons and two grandsons live.

John J. Greco

TRUSTEE

John Greco is currently a supervising producer with Discovery Channel International. Before that he spent six years at the Washington bureau of NBC, where his last assignment was as a producer on the news division''s Investigative Unit. He covered terrorism and the government''s campaigns against al-Qaeda and Iraq. As a producer for the newsmagazine "Dateline NBC," Mr. Greco covered breaking news since the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, through the 9/11 and anthrax attacks, to the Washington-area sniper spree. He has also produced segments for "Nightly News with Tom Brokaw," the "Today Show," and MSNBC. Winner of the Emmy and other national journalism awards, Mr. Greco has specialized in investigative, hidden-camera, and automotive safety stories. Before joining NBC, Mr. Greco worked for several documentary companies that produce for PBS, including Hedrick Smith Productions. There, he served as research director for a series on international economic competitiveness. Earlier in his career he worked in print journalism. Mr. Greco earned a Master''s at Tufts'' Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He started working as a volunteer for the Fund''s Strategic Communications Committee in 1998, and has been a member of the Board of Trustees since March, 2000.

Michael J. Moniz

TRUSTEE

A veteran of the private equity, investment banking and technology industries, Michael Moniz brings a unique perspective to developing companies in an executive, management and advisory capacity. He is the co-founder, President, and CEO of Circadence Corporation, a leader in the network optimization and cyber-defense markets. His commitment to financial viability, strategic acquisitions, and the development of innovative intellectual property has driven Circadence’s strong, continued growth in the WAN solutions market. Notably, in 2008, he led the company to a first place ranking in the Deloitte Fast 50. Under his direction, the company has secured 20 patents, many focusing on high-growth market segments such as cloud and mobile computing.

In addition to his work with Circadence, Mr. Moniz is a founding Managing Director with Paladin Capital Group, a leading multi-stage private equity firm providing capital for growing companies whose principal business centers on products and services that address homeland security issues and needs with over $950 million dollars of committed capital across multiple funds and 36 portfolio companies.

Mr. Moniz has been a two-time finalist for Ernst and Young’s prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and he is featured in the New York Times best-selling book How to Act Like a CEO by Debra Benton. Mr. Moniz shares his business expertise and contributes guidance as a board member on several corporate and non-profit organizations including the Atlas Institute at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He was educated at the University of Colorado and Harvard University. He attended the Aresty Institute of Executive Education at the Wharton School.

Always pursuing ever-greater challenges, Mr. Moniz, an avid alpinist, co-holds the world speed record for his ascent of the 50 highest mountains in the U.S. in 43 days and has summited four of the Seven Summits. In 2010, National Geographic named Mr. Moniz one of their Ultimate Adventurers.

David E. Morey

TRUSTEE

David Morey, Vice Chairman of Core Strategy Group and Founder of DMG, is one of America’s leading strategic consultants. He is co-author of the award-winning book: The Underdog Advantage (McGraw-Hill), and for many years served as Adjunct Professor of International Affairs at Columbia University. Additionally, Mr. Morey was Chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations' Task Force on Public Diplomacy and served on the Defense Science Board’s Task Force on U.S. Strategic Communications and National Security. Over the years, Mr. Morey has worked with some of the world’s top business leaders—and he has advised five Noble Peace Prize winners and fifteen winning global presidential campaigns, including that of President Barack Obama.

His corporate clients include Verizon, Pepsi, Mars, KPMG, Deloitte, McDonald's, Microsoft, News Corp., Nike, P&G, Disney, Visa, Coca-Cola, TPG, GE, American Express, Google, Linked-in, Merck, CVS, Samsung and many others. Mr. Morey is the former Co-Chair of the Fund for Peace and serves on a number of corporate and public sector boards.

Aaron Sherinian

TRUSTEE

Aaron Sherinian serves as the Vice President of Communications and Public Relations at the United Nations Foundation. He leads the Foundation’s public relations efforts, media relationships, strategic outreach, and online presence. Before joining the UN Foundation, Aaron Sherinian served as Managing Director of Public Affairs for the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. government development assistance agency administering poverty reduction grants totaling over $7 billion in 40 partner countries. In this capacity, he oversaw the agency’s strategic communications portfolio, media relationships, and public relations agenda.

His professional background includes a decade of service as a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Department of State. Before returning to Washington, he was Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Quito, Ecuador, where he was responsible for Embassy relations with media outlets and acted as the Ambassador’s communications advisor. His diplomatic experience includes a tour as Deputy Political and Economic Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan, Armenia, where he managed programmatic coordination and outreach for the U.S. government’s annual assistance budget of $90 million. He served in the Political and Consular Sections of the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica and in the Office of Policy Planning under two Assistant Secretaries of State for the Western Hemisphere. His experience also includes service at U.S. Missions in Colombia and the Holy See (Vatican). Before joining the Department of State, Mr. Sherinian worked at the Washington International Trade Association (WITA). He also held positions as a marketing consultant for the Italian distributors for Apple Computer and as a freelance interpreter and writer in Italy. He is a member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC).

Mr. Sherinian is a native of Pasadena, California. He holds degrees from the Johns Hopkins University (School of Advanced International Studies – SAIS) and Brigham Young University. In addition to Spanish, he speaks Italian, Armenian, and French. He and his wife have three children.

Jeri Thomson

Ms. Thomson was sworn in as the 30th Secretary of the United States Senate on July 12, 2001, which is the Senate''s chief legislative, financial, and administrative officer. Prior to assuming the position of Secretary of the Senate, Ms. Thomson was a senior member of the United States Senate''s professional staff with more than 25 years experience working on legislative and national politics, serving as the Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Senate from 1989 to 1995. Prior to serving as Assistant Secretary, Ms. Thomson was a senior staff member to Senator John V. Tunney (D-CA), Special Assistant to the Sergeant at Arms and Deputy Director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Ms. Thomson received a B.A. from the University of Washington. She was a Kodak Fellow at Harvard University''s program for Senior Managers in Government. In 1993, Ms Thomson was selected as one of the 100 top data processors in government, industry and academia for her work in automating legislative processes and procedures in the United States Senate.
